LOUIS -- Russell Martin wanted a better fate for his starting pitcher and helped deliver a happier ending. As new chapters are added to Guillem Balagues Cristiano Ronaldo biography, we look at an extract telling the tale of the Euro 2016 final. Ronaldo, having been taken off with an injury in the first half in Paris against France, spent much of the game barking instructions alongside manager Fernando Santos. But did his behaviour go too far? And was this more Cristiano Ronaldos win than it was Portugals? You can purchase the updated Cristiano Ronaldo: The Biography HERE I was very sad, recounted Nani. It was a very special moment for us, very emotional, we were all in it together, and when I saw him fall down and cry, tears welled up in my eyes too. I realised that he was going to miss the rest of the final, the most important one of his life. I was really gutted and I grabbed the armband quickly and tried to tell him that we were going to give our all to do him proud and show what the team was made of, that we were going to fight. Portugal beat hosts France in Paris in July The game went flat after Cristianos injury. But after [Ricardo] Quaresma was brought on in his place, the Portuguese midfield seemed to come more into their own. In fact, the impression was that after the blow of losing their leader, Portugals morale recovered and they felt capable of anything if they stuck to the formula that had got them this far: hard work and playing as a team.We tried to lift each others spirits by talking to one another and shouting things like, Come on, lets do it, its OK, were going to win this, weve got quality too, come on! And as time passed and France failed to score, we grew in confidence, Nani said. The players came face to face with Ronaldo at half-time. Yes, he was looking at his knee and was disconsolate, Nani recalled. Cristiano had cried his eyes out, but he pulled himself together in order to rally the troops. Lads, were going to win 2-0. Stick together and fight to the end, he told them.During the game, Cristiano barked out instructions from the dugout. He shouted at everyone to track back when they lost the ball, urged the centre-backs to go up for a corner and put his hands to his face when Éder went close with a header. Ronaldo was forced off with an injury in the first half After Eders goal, Ronaldo took up a position behind Fernando Santos in the technical area. Initially he was tentative, seemingly aware that he was invading the coachs space, wanting to be there but knowing he shouldnt be. At one point, Santos threw up his arms and Ronaldo followed suit. After that, the player continued to coach the team, with Santos ignoring him.During the match I looked over to the dugout and thought, Whats Ronaldo doing over there? admitted Nani, But then I refocused on the game. Six months half price Upgrade to Sky Sports to watch Man Utd v Arsenal on Saturday and get the first six months half price Cristiano repeatedly told his team-mates not to bring the ball out from defence hastily. He rebuked the forwards for not defending. He called on the fans to get behind the team. He advised Nani to hold the ball up, spread play and keep possession. Dont gamble, pass it around and play it backwards! he shouted at Nani and Eder.Ronaldo celebrated the moment of victory alone. Turning towards the crowd (his audience) with a skip, his arms aloft, he looked up and shouted. A member of the coaching staff hugged him, but he did not reciprocate. Then he dropped dramatically to the ground, his sidekick still hanging on to him, and lay there spreadeagled, well aware of where the cameras were pointing. Ronaldo lifts the trophy after Eders extra-time winner They say happiness is only real when its shared, and if youre Ronaldo, you can share it with the whole world. Tom LaGarde Jersey. Nani said: I only saw all of Ronaldos shenanigans in the dugout after the match, when we were in the dressing room laughing together. We were happy and we watched the videos. He had them on his phone and showed them to me. We laughed. He said to me, Look, look at what I did...The sports psychologist Bill Beswick told me that at the beginning of their careers footballers fear the cameras, but once they become better players they develop a love affair with this object that embraces them, indulges them and showcases the good things that they do. And once they are stars, they get addicted to them. Ronaldo shares the trophy with manager Fernando Santos, but did the Real Madrid man steal the limelight? Footballers create a mental script before games. This is a sort of story detailing how the match might play out. Ronaldo would have visualised himself having a starring role. When he got injured, he wanted to continue feeling important and so decided to help the team from outside the pitch. He believed he could have an influence from the fringes, and thats why he stood just a metre from the touchline. And performed those highly theatrical gestures. It was his moment, but it was snatched away from him on the pitch. So he did what he felt was necessary off it.Ronaldo couldnt imagine the team winning without him.The way he shook Santos (who all the while looked at the ground or watched the play) suggested that he did not see him as a superior. He was just the one who named the team, guided them towards the trophy and asked Cristiano to sacrifice himself. Which he did. But none of that meant that Santos outranked him.Interestingly, when Ronaldo affectionately shoved the coach, he did not push him towards the action, but rather in the opposite direction. As if he wanted to remove him from the stage, as if Santos were stealing his limelight. Santos is thrown up by players after the win, Portugals first major tournament success As narratives are so often driven by results, it was repeatedly stated in Portugal that the team had benefited from Ronaldos passion and leadership. But not everyone shared this view. Portuguese football legend Antonio Simoes criticised his behaviour. So did José Mourinho: Ronaldo lost a little emotional control. He didnt do any harm, but I dont think he helped in any way by doing that in the final few minutes of a European Championship final. It was the 11 players on the pitch who did the job, and it was the coach who led the team. Id like to think it was just an overflow of emotion from someone who saw that there were just minutes to go to achieve an objective that everyone wanted.A few weeks after the final, Santos spoke out in Ronaldos defence: Since I had so many instructions to give, I turned to him, just like I turned to my assistants, to tell [Ricardo] Quaresma to close down the space around Raphael Guerreiro. The coach claimed that he never felt his authority had been undermined because Cristiano was never guilty of trying to usurp him as the manager, he had simply externalised his nerves in his own way.Talk about a gracious explanation. You can watch Premier League and EFL Cup football, plus Englands tour of Bangladesh and the Mexican Grand Prix on Sky Sports. (SportsNetwork. Vin Baker Jersey .com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs enter an Original Six clash with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena having lost two of its last three games, but with 80 points, the Leafs are occupying the first of the two wild card spots in the East. Detroits sagging offence is making the clubs push for a 23rd straight playoff appearance a difficult task. The Red Wings, who last missed the postseason during the spring of 1990, are three points behind the New York Rangers for the last playoff berth in the East and seven back of Toronto. The Leafs fell to 2-2-0 on a five-game road trip after dropping a 4-2 decision at Washington on Sunday. Toronto fell behind 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game and never recovered. Dion Phaneuf and Troy Bodie lit the lamp for the Maple Leafs, while James Reimer stopped 29 shots in defeat. Reimer will start again tonight with No. 1 netminder Jonathan Bernier currently dealing with a groin strain. Bernier suffered the injury in Thursdays win over Los Angeles and was unable to dress for Sundays tilt in D.C. Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle updated Berniers status after practice on Monday. "Jonathan Bernier went for an MRI today and it was revealed that he has a low- grade groin strain," Carlyle said. "We dont believe it is week-to-week but rather day-to-day." The Red Wings have scored just three goals over their last four games. The club is 1-3-0 during that stretch, with the lone win coming in a shootout decision against visiting Edmonton on Friday. The offensive issues are no surprise considering the Red Wings are still playing without a host of key forwards, including captain Henrik Zetterberg and Russian superstar Pavel Datsyuk. "You cant look ahead at all," Red Wings defenceman Danny DeKeyser told his teams official website. "You have to take it one game at a time. Every game, if you dont get points it could come back and haunt you. It could be the last game of the year, but we dont want to be at that point. We want to be in the playoffs after 82 games." Detroit managed just one goal in Sundays 4-1 road loss against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Wings trailed the contest 2-1 after 40 minutes before the defending Stanley Cup champions salted away the win by scoring the only two goals of the third period. "I thought we were in a good situation after two," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "We were set up and we let it slip away." Jimmy Howard stopped 26 shots for the reeling Red Wings, who have lost five of their last seven games. Adding to Detroits injury problems, forward Justin Abdelkader left Sundays game with a lower-body injury and head coach Mike Babcock confirmed on Tuesday that he is out ten days to two weeks after his leg was cut against the Blackhawks. Questionable for tonights contest is Todd Bertuzzi (lower-body injury). If the veteran winger us unable to go tonight, the Red Wings will us callup forward Landon Ferraro from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. Ferraro, the son of former NHLer and TSN Hockey Analyst Ray Ferraro, was a second-round pick by Detroit in 2009, but has yet to make his NHL debut. He has 13 goals and 15 assists in 60 games for the Griffins this season. Howard expects to get the start for Detroit on Tuesday. He is 0-1-1 with a 2.82 goals against average in his career versus the Maple Leafs. Toronto is 14-14-7 as the visiting team this season. After completing its swing on Tuesday, the Leafs will play seven of their next nine games on home ice. Detroit is just 13-11-9 at home this season, but the Wings have won two straight at the Joe and are 3-0-1 in their last four games in Motown. This is the third of four meetings between the Red Wings and Leafs this season. The clubs have split both encounters so far, with each team picking up a shootout win. Tuesdays game marks the first encounter between the clubs since Toronto recorded a 3-2 win on Jan. 1 in the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium. Ireland was the last unbeaten side in the championship after France fell to Wales on Friday, and was favoured to end a three-match losing run to England with a side with more than twice as many caps, rampant momentum, and added incentive to celebrate Brian ODriscolls world record-tying 139th test cap.PHOENIX -- Nothing like a trip to Chase Field to turn things around for the New York Mets. Dillon Gee allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, and the Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep. Arizona finished an 0-6 homestand in which it led at the end of just one inning and dropped to 1-11 in home games, including a pair of losses in Australia that started the season. At 4-14, the Diamondbacks are off to their worst 18-game start. "I dont know what were in need of besides playing better baseball -- an exorcism of something," Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy said. "Weve crossed over into that bad side. Obviously morales low. Youve got a team thats fighting and doing everything to get out of it, but we just cant seem to climb out of it really in any sense." Gee (1-0) retired his first 14 batters before Martin Prados double down the left-field line. He struck out three, walked none and threw 72 pitches. Gee also had an RBI groundout and made a nice play in the sixth after centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis failed in a diving attempt to catch Gerardo Parras blooper. Parra took off for second and Gee, seeing no one covering the base, rushed to the bag and tagged the runner out on the throw from shortstop Ruben Tejada. Gee pitched at least six innings for the 24th time in his last 26 starts. "It all kind of clicked today, and I felt pretty good," he said. Catcher Anthony Recker said "you could tell when he was warming up in the pen he had really good stuff, and he was able to carry it into the game." Mets manager Terry Collins said he pulled Gee after a couple of pitches were hit hard off him. "Terry did what he had to do, and I respect it," Gee said, "but I definitely want to keep going." Recker hit a solo homer off McCarthy. Two errors leed to the final two Mets runs in the ninth. Vladimir Radmanovic Jersey. . New York has won four of five and went 6-3 on its trip, extending its Chase Field winning streak to five. "A tremendous road trip," Collins said. "They picked it up, they got big hits when we needed hits." Starting pitching has been the biggest problem in the Diamondbacks skid, but not this time. McCarthy (0-3) gave up three runs, nine hits and three walks -- two intentional -- in 5 2-3 innings. "Mack threw good enough to win that game," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "We played poorly. We continue to play poorly. ... We made mistakes, we ran into an out, we made a couple of errors, were not able to contain guys running the bases and were not able to throw the ball to first base." Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt homered off Jose Valverde in the ninth, and Prado had three hits for the Diamondbacks. Recker homered in the second, Nieuwenhuis had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Gees RBI made it 3-0 in the sixth. When Goldschmidt doubled off the centre-field wall with one out in the seventh, Miguel Montero hit a drive to right that Andrew Brown caught with a leap at the fence. Goldschmidt was stranded when Mark Trumbo grounded out weakly to shortstop. "I really want to continue this momentum going back home," Young said. "It was definitely a good road trip as a team. We put that first home stand behind us and now we can continue where we want to go." NOTES: Young twice stole second and has nine steals this season. ... The Mets selected RHP Daisuke Matsuzakas contract from Triple-A Las Vegas and sent LHP John Lannan outright to Las Vegas. Lannan can refuse the assignment and elect to become a free agent. ... Both teams have Thursday off. ... The Diamondbacks were 5-13 to start their inaugural 1998 season. ' ' '

"Its been an educational process for me," Subban told reporters after the meeting without revealing its details. "I will move on from today and get ready for the season. We have to live with those decisions." Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin declined to talk to reporters as he walked out of the meeting. PRETORIA, South Africa - The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius, set to open Monday, marks the start of a dramatic new chapter in the life of the double-amputee athlete who ran at the Olympics and became a global star before he shot his girlfriend to death. Patrick Willis Jersey . Prosecutors charged the 27-year-old Pistorius with murder in Reeva Steenkamps death and say it was with premeditation. They say they will seek a life sentence if Pistorius is convicted, the sternest punishment available in South Africa. South Africa no longer has the death penalty. The intense public interest in the Pistorius trial is shown by the launching Sunday night of a 24-hour cable channel devoted to covering the court case. If convicted on the murder charge, Pistorius could be sent to prison for at least 25 years before the chance of parole, the minimum time someone must serve if given a life sentence in South Africa. He would be older than 50 before he could be released. The state says Pistorius intentionally killed Steenkamp at his home in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day last year by shooting her through a toilet door after an argument. Pistorius denies murder and says he killed his girlfriend by mistake when he fired four times through the door thinking there was a dangerous nighttime intruder on the other side. A lesser sentence is possible if Pistorius is found guilty of murder but without premeditation. He also could be convicted of culpable homicide, South Africas version of manslaughter in which someone is killed through negligence. Pistorius claims he was acting in self-defence against what he believed at the time was a threat to his life. As well as murder, Pistorius faces a second charge of illegal possession of ammunition for bullets found at his Pretoria house that he allegedly didnt have proper licensing for. Prosecutors say he also will be indicted Monday with two more gun charges relating to him allegedly shooting in public on two separate occasions before Steenkamps killing. The serving of an updated indictment to Pistorius in court is expected to be the first move at the trial at Pretorias high court. He has not yet been formally served with the papers that include all four charges against him, although his lawyers have had the papers and details of the additional gun charges since last year, prosecutors say. The gun charges reportedly relate to him allegedly shooting out the sunroof of a car in one incident and another when he allegedly fired a gun inside a restaurant, apparently by mistake. Those incidents happened in the court jurisdiction of the city of Johannesburg, not where Steenkamp was killed in Pretoria, and prosecutors applied to have the two charges included and heard at his murder trial. Female judge Thokozile Masipa will ultimately pronounce the champion runner innocent or guilty and will decide on any sentence. South Africa has no trial by jury. Parts of the trial will be broadcast on live television, both in South Africa and across the world, and hundreds of reporters are expected to descend on North Gauteng High Court in the South African capital for the start of the trial. The 24-hour cable channel devoted solely to the trial will continue until the case is finished. The trial will deal with the bloody killing of a 29-year-old model and law graduate, but also the issue of gun ownership and South Africas problem of violent crime, which Pistorius says was the reason why he kept his licensed 9 mm handgun under his bed. Pistorius says his fear of crime was why he fired four shots through the door, hitting Steenkamp three times — in the head, elbow and hip. Prosecutors maintain he was simply angry with her after an argument. Members of Pistorius family will likely attend the trial, as they did on his previous court hearings. His uncle, Arnold Pistorius, sister Aimee and brother Carl are all also listed as state witnesses. "We love Oscar, and believe in him, and will be standing by him throughout the coming trial," Arnold Pistorius said in a statement over the weekend. For the first time, members of Steenkamps family will also be in the courtroom according to a family statement that her mother June and others would be at the trial. The parents and close relatives of Steenkamp did not attend any of Pistorius previous court appearances. "All we are looking for is closure and to know that our daughter did not suffer on that tragic Valentines Day," Steenkamps parents said in a statement this month and days before the one-year anniversary of the shooting that stunned South Africa. Chris Doleman Jersey . And like the near entirety of last season, Jonathan Bernier and Torontos goaltending tandem is up to the task. Solomon Thomas Jersey .K. Subban has picked the right time of the year to go on an offensive tear. http://www.custom49ersjersey.com/custom-larry-schreiber-jersey-large-1308d.html .Under the agreement announced Monday, the Cuban defector is guaranteed $68.5 million over six seasons.Tomas gets a $14 million signing bonus that is payable within 30 days of the deals approval by Major League Baseball, and then salaries of $2 million next year, $4 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017 and $10 million in 2018.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Portland Trail Blazers will continue to press on without LaMarcus Aldridge Thursday night when the Boston Celtics pay a visit to the Moda Center. The All-Star forward injured his left hand in Portlands win on Monday over the Sacramento Kings. Head coach Terry Stotts told oregonlive.com that Aldridge had an MRI, but tests were inconclusive, so another is scheduled for this week. For whatever reason, they needed to do another one, Stotts said. The team missed their best player on Wednesday in a 118-113 road loss to the Phoenix Suns. The Blazers couldnt overcome a monster night from the Suns three-man point guard wrecking ball. Eric Bledsoe had a career-high 33 points, 10 rebounds and six assists; Isaiah Thomas finished with 27 off the bench and Goran Dragic added 16. Nicolas Batum paced Portland with 27 points -- 10 of those coming in the fourth -- and Damian Lillard and Wesley Matthews scored 22 apiece in the setback. Dorell Wright and Chris Kaman scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, for Portland We did a great job fighting back and giving ourselves a chance down the stretch, Lillard said. They made some big plays at the end of the game and they did what they needed to do to pull it out. The Blazers trailed by 25 in the second quarter and fought back. A 15-point lead vanished in the frame, and Batums 3-pointer at 4:05 gave Portland its first lead since the opening quarter. Batum hit a deep 3-ball two minutes later to increase Portlands lead to five before Dragic hit a corner 3 and Bledsoe converted a three-point play to put Phoenix back in front. Thoomas Robinson and Markieff Morris then traded runners and Bledsoe made four free throws in the final 10. Steve DeBerg Jersey. 9 seconds to secure the win. The Blazers host Washington on Saturday before heading east for four games to end the month. The Celtics have dropped three straight, including the opener of this six-game western odyssey. Boston fell to the Los Angeles Clippers, 102-93, on Monday. Boston fell for the fifth time in its last six games despite getting 59 points from its bench. Brandon Bass paced the Celtics with 17 points and Marcus Thornton chipped in 15 while shooting 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Marcus Smart scored 14 with four triples and seven assists, and Evan Turner contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Celtics trailed by 23 in the third quarter, but responded. Thorntons 3 with 3:50 to go made it a one-possession game, but Los Angeles tightened up its defense the rest of the way. The Clippers scored eight of the next nine points, and the Celtics shot just 1-of-5 from the field after the Thornton triple. Chris Pauls 3 with 48 seconds left punctuated the win. We cant be down by that much, said Celtics coach Brad Stevens. We took a lot of contested shots in the first half, and thats not good. We were better in the second half. We closed it to three, but we missed a couple of good looks down the stretch. Boston will visit the Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves on this trek. The Blazers bested the Celtics on Nov. 23 in Boston and have taken four straight in this series. The two teams have split the previous six meetings in Portland. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Showing that life in the NHL isnt always about five-star hotels or designer suits, Leafs coach Randy Carlyle found himself in a Swiss Chalet in Parry Sound, Ont., on Boxing Day. And while his players were with family and friends, likely away from the limelight, Carlyle was hard to miss among those ordering a quarter-chicken dinner. "Some fan walks by and says Hey Carlyle, you better get those Leafs going," Carlyle said Friday with a smile. "Everybody in the Swiss Chalet knew I was there so I guess I didnt get away from it (hockey)." For his players, hockey had been on the backburner, at least for a day or two. "It was nice to have a break, physically and mentally," winger Joffrey Lupul said ahead of Friday nights game against the visiting Buffalo Sabres. "It (December) was a tough month for us, record-wise and just schedule, travel-wise. So hopefully a couple of days rest is what we needed and we are able to put together some wins here." "Christmas break, you kind of recharge and refuel and re-energize and get ready to push through to the finish," said captain Dion Phaneuf. "Everybody came back rested, got to spend some time with their families and friends over the holidays and thats what its about," he added. "Now were back to work tonight and weve got to focus on getting our game back to where we want it to be." The Leafs (18-16-5) are coming off shootout losses to the Rangers and Red Wings. Toronto has just one regulation win in its last 18 outings (5-9-4). The Sabres desperately needed the break. A bout of flu meant interim coach Ted Nolan was able to dress just 16 players Monday against Phoenix. Having their Rochester Americans farm team in Switzerland at the Spengler Cup didnt help matters. "They look a lot better today, so thats good," Nolan said Friday of his Sabres." Centre Cody Hodgson, sidelined after blocking a shot, is still not ready to return, however. The goalie matchup Friday appeared to be Jonathan Bernier for the Leafs against Ryan Miller of the Sabres. Carlyle said the Christmas break seemed to have been worthwhile, pointing to the energy he saw from his team in tthe morning skate. Stitched Timberwolves Jerseys. "We all felt pretty good out there this morning," defenceman Cody Franson concurred. "It was nice to have a couple of days (off)." Still, as Swiss Chalet showed, its hard to hide from hockey. "But you never really truly forget about it because its always in the back of your mind to some degree," Carlyle said. "We just hope we can take some of that energy that we had this morning and transfer it into tonights hockey game. "These games are a different games, Im going to tell you. You never know what youre going to get off of three days (rest) and one morning skate. Im sure all the coaches in the leagues are saying the same thing." At 10-24-3, the Sabres sit at the bottom of the NHL. But they are on a mini-streak, having won three of their last four and have gone 4-4-2 in their last 10 games. Toronto is 3-5-2 over the same period. Luck may also be finally on the Sabres side. Buffalo won last time out via a bizarre overtime goal against Phoenix that saw the puck fly into the air and land in the back of Coyotes goalie Mike Smiths pants. An unknowing Smith slid backwards into the goal, taking the puck with him for a 2-1 Buffalo win Monday. There could be more mayhem in front of goal Friday, with six-foot-eight, 259-pound tough guy John Scott expected to see time on the power play in front of the Toronto net. The big man had 199 career NHL games under his belt going into Friday night. At the other end, the Leafs will likely need a plan of their own against a hot goalie. Miller is 4-1-0 in last five starts, with a 1.56 goals against average and .952 save percentage. He has not allowed a third-period goal during that run. He is also 2-0 against the Leafs this season and 31-15-1 overall against Toronto. Carlyle had not lost his sense of humour over the Christmas break. Did you miss us, was his first question from the media after the morning skate. "No I cant say I missed you," he replied to laughter. "I just didnt think about you." The media were back in their numbers Friday. Leafs TV, the teams house channel, had six people in the arena seats talking on TV during the skate. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- After the Chicago White Sox committed a costly error in the top of the ninth that tied the game, Chris Sale wound up with a no-decision despite striking out 13 batters in eight innings. Mike Nott Jersey Store . He wasnt the least bit upset about it. Alexei Ramirez singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and the White Sox beat the New York Mets 5-4 on Tuesday night. "I dont think Ive ever been disappointed after a win," Sale said. "Stuff happens. Its definitely not the first time thats happened and its probably not the last either. My record is irrelevant." The Mets scored the tying run with two outs in the ninth on the defensive miscue. Pinch hitter Daniel Murphy hit a popup in front of the mound and third baseman Conor Gillaspie called for the ball before second baseman Gordon Beckham tried to make the catch as they nearly collided. The ball fell for an error by Beckham and David Wright scored after he had singled and stole second. "Stupid play for me," Beckham said. "My heart was in the right spot, but my mind obviously wasnt. It was loud. I screwed up. It is what it is. Im glad we won. It didnt cost us the game, but its a stupid play and Im an idiot." Manager Robin Ventura said the first player who reaches the ball in no mans land should make the play. He said the White Sox, who ranked 13th in the AL with a .980 fielding percentage, might be trying too hard. "Youre at a loss to describe it," Ventura said. "At least they gathered together and scored a run in the next inning. But its just a communication thing, and you got to clean it up." Ramirezs winning hit came with runners on the corners. Jeff Keppinger singled and Beckham reached on a fielding error by reliever LaTroy Hawkins (2-1). Keppinger moved to third on a groundball by Tyler Flowers. Addison Reed (3-0) got the victory after blowing his third save. "The thing Im most disappointed in is Sale didnt get the win," Reed said. "He pitched his butt off and gets nothing to show for it, but we got out of it with the win." Sale allowed three runs, four hits and two walks. He fell one short of his season high for strikeouts and two shy of his career high, set on May 28, 2012, against Tampa. Sale struck out the side in the fourth and sixth innings and fanned nine through the first four frames. He retired 10 straight batters after allowing an RBI single to Josh Satin in the first inning. "My arm was loose," Sale said. "After the first couple of innings, I just felt like I had good control and good command of all my pitches." The White Sox came in averaging 2.69 runs when Sale started this season -- the lowest run support average in the majors. Sale remained 0-4 in June. "He pitched great, everything that youd want him to do," Ventura said. Flowers homered to tie the game in the third and scored the go-ahead run on Ramirezs sacrifice fly in the fifth. In his second major league start, New Yorks Zack Wheeler allowed four runs, struck out one and walked three in 5 1-3 innings. A first-round draft pick by the Giants in 2009, Wheeler threw six shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves to win his debut June 18. "Fastball has got life to it," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "His curveball today was so much better than his last start. Now if he finds his slider to go with it hes got three pitches. Youll get a lot of outs." The Mets scored two runs in the first inning. Eric Young Jr. led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Marlon Byrd sacrifice fly. Wright drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Satin single. The White Sox pulled within one in the bottom of the first. Alejandro De Aza led off with a single and eventually scored on a groundout. Flowers tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer in the third. It was his seventh homer and the first major league homer Wheeler has allowed. Andrew Brown hit a go-ahead, leadoff homer on the first pitch from Sale in the fifth inning. Sale retired 10 straight batters and struck out four straight before the homer. The White Sox scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Beckham singled and later scored on a groundout. Flowers was hit by Wheeler and went on to score on a sac fly. NOTES: White Sox 1B Paul Konerko was out of the lineup because of a sore back. Ventura said the injury recently popped up. ... They kicked off the still-going trend of host cities winning the Grey Cup and sent Hall of Fame head coach Wally Buono to the front office a champion.TORONTO -- For once, expectations are sky high at the start of Toronto FC training camp. A team that has long been the MLS doormat --Toronto has won six, nine, 10, nine, six, five, and six games since coming into the league in 2007 -- enters the 2014 season as a shooting star thanks to the hoopla over high-priced signings Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley and Giberto. "Its a bloody big deal" is the already tired slogan around the acquisition of England striker Defoe. But the atmosphere is unmistakable. "Theres a buzz," said general manager Tim Bezbatchenko. The players started arriving late this week and most trained indoors Friday, although manager Ryan Nelsen did not involve those who were are the recent Canadian national team camp in Florida. He also gave Bradley a pass, given his recent involvement in Serie A. "Michaels had a lot of football," Nelsen said. "He doesnt need it now. He just probably needs a little rest." Captain Steven Caldwell sat out with a minor calf knock while the club waited on visa paperwork for Brazils Gilberto and Jackson. Toronto leaves Sunday for Florida. The 31-year-old Defoe will remain with Englands Tottenham until the end of February. Toronto opens the season March 15 in Seattle. Nelsen says the team will give Defoe time to bed in when he gets here. "We have to be very careful and we have to judge it. Hes here for four years, its not like were going to rush him back, patch him up if we have to and throw him out on the field. We have to think long-term. "So when hes ready to play, hell be ready to play. If thats Game 1, then brilliant. If its Game 4, so be it." In his second year on the job, the 36-year-old Nelsen finds himself in a totally different situation. He arrived last year with minimal knowledge of the talent that awaited him. He has the squad of his choice largely in place this time. "In all honesty I thought it might take a couple of years to get to the situation where we are right now," said Nelsen. There was short-term pain for long-term gain last season. Some 27 players came in -- if you count Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim whose loan deal from QPR never quite happened -- and 26 exited. The revolving door has slowed ahead of 2014 but those coming in have been quality additions. The three DPs are joined by American Justin Morrow and Englands Bradley Orr on defence, Jackson and Canadian star Dwayne De Rosario in midfield and teenage Canadian forward Jordan Hamilton. The team still has some roster work to do on the status of Argentine midfielder Matias Laba and English fullback Richard Eckersley. Laba is in camp while Eckersley, with the teams blessing, is not. Laba also has a designated player deeal, meaning Toronto is one over the three DP limit. Peter Worrell Jersey. So the club has to find a way to restructure his contract or move him on. The club likes the Argentine, who at 22 has many years ahead on him. Heres guessing the team finds a way to farm him out without losing track of him. Eckersley is a victim -- sort of -- of a rich contract that grew fatter this year when the team was forced to restructure his deal to help ease its salary cap burden last season. Toronto could take a one-time contract buyout to get out from under the Eckersley contract burden without taking a salary cap hit. Toronto can also reach a settlement with Eckersley or deal him while eating some of the contract, which would impact the cap. Other MLS teams are unlikely to take Eckersley at his current number. Still, Bezbatchenko is confident he can find a way. Given his background as a former MLS insider and the leagues seemingly fluid rules, he is likely to succeed. When it comes to his starting lineup, Nelsen often says his players -- not him -- pick the team with their performance on the pitch. When all his pieces are in place, one would expect a likely starting 11 of Joe Bendik in goal behind a backline of Morrow, Caldwell, Canadian Doneil Henry and Orr, a midfield of Jackson, Bradley, De Rosario (or fellow Canadian Jonathan Osorio) and Alvaro Rey with Gilberto and Defoe up front. Its a good-looking team sheet, although the rest of the roster is young. Nelsen likes what he sees but is realistic. He knows it takes time to turn around a franchise and establish a winning culture. "It doesnt matter who you put out on the field, the clubs got to learn how to win ... we know weve got a long way to go." Nelsen adds: "I say that with one side of my face. The other side says if theres a group of guys that can live up to any expectations, I feel like these guys will really enjoy it and will enjoy the pressure. "It will be different for them because we will have a target on our back. Everybody will want to beat us. Everybody wanted to play us because they knew they could beat us in the past. Now theyll want to play us because they will want to try to prove a point to beat us. "Its a different mentality and its going to be difficult. But its a lovely challenge to be in." A one-year partnership with the North Carolina-based Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL Pro League gives TFC a place to give some of its younger talent a chance to play. Toronto may also look to loan a player within MLS. Bezbatchenko was part of the process in getting the newly installed loan format approved while he was working in the league office. Canadian international Issey Nakajima-Farran is in the Toronto camp on trial. ' ' '

rushing TD the top-ranked Mounties defence allowed all

CHICAGO - The Chicago Blackhawks felt the repercussions of Brent Seabrooks hit on David Backes again on Sunday. USA Soccer Pro Shop . How it affects the rest of their playoff series against the St. Louis Blues remains to be seen. Seabrook was suspended for three games by the NHL on his 29th birthday for his elbow to Backes head late in the third period of St. Louis 4-3 overtime win in Game 2. Now Chicago has to dig out of a 2-0 hole without one of its best defencemen in a rocky start to its Stanley Cup title defence. "You need his size, you need his presence and experience and his leadership," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said before Seabrooks suspension was announced. "Hes got the big shot on the point and hes on our power play as well. He kills penalties, so he plays all important minutes." Seabrook received a five-minute major and game misconduct penalty after he wiped out Backes at 15:09 of the third, and the Blues used the resulting power play to score the tying goal with 6.4 seconds left in regulation on Vladimir Tarasenkos long wrist shot. Backes had to be helped off the ice and did not return. The captains status for Monday nights Game 3 is up in the air. "All I know is hes upright, and thats about it right now," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said Sunday. "We dont have any further information and probably wont have until late tomorrow." Backes and Seabrook were not made available to the media on the day off, but much of the talk centred on the hit anyway. The TV broadcast picked up someone taunting Backes in the aftermath of the big blow, but it was unclear if it was coming from the ice or the crowd in the corner where the play occurred. "I saw them talking to him. It makes it a little more gutless," Blues forward Ryan Reaves said. "I dont think theres any need for that. He doesnt even know where he really is. I think if they want to start getting into that battle, we can play the same way. Well see where it takes us." Quenneville said he did not see or hear any players taunting Backes after he went down. In addition to the hit by Seabrook, Hitchcock also was upset by Bryan Bickells knee-on-knee collision with Blues centre Vladimir Sobotka in the third. He said the Blackhawks forward was involved in a similar play with defenceman Alex Pietrangelo in the first. "That part bothers me more than the hit on David, a hit that went array," Hitchcock said. "The hit on Sobotka was a continuation of what happened to Petro in the first period." Here are five things to watch in Game 3 of this increasingly testy series: HOME SWEET HOME: The Blackhawks went 11-2 at home in the playoffs last year, outscoring the Wild, Red Wings, Kings and Bruins by a combined score of 41-23. They went 27-7-7 at the United Center this season, including a 2-0-1 mark against the Blues. "You just feed off of it," Quenneville said. "Itll be exciting to get back here, get some of the positive vibes off it and look to turn this thing around." VLADIMIR THE GREAT: Tarasenko missed the last 15 games of the regular season with a broken right thumb. But the 22-year-old Russian forward caused all sorts of headaches for the Blackhawks in the first two games of the series. The speedy Tarasenko had a first-period goal in the playoff opener, and then had the tying power-play score in Saturdays victory. With Seabrook out for the next three games and Backes status in question, Tarasenko could take on a more prominent role for the rest of the series. SO MANY PENALTIES: The Blues and Blackhawks combined for 17 penalties and 61 penalty minutes in Game 2. The defending Stanley Cup champions were responsible for 11 of those penalties and 41 penalty minutes, both season highs. It looked as if the Blackhawks wanted to match the physicality of the Blues, and it took them out of their puck possession game at times. "I think a little bit we might have played into their hands, but weve got to get back to our hockey, because when were playing that way we do a good job and thats how we win," Chicago forward Brandon Saad said. BEEN HERE BEFORE: St. Louis began last years playoffs with a pair of 2-1 victories over Los Angeles at home, including an overtime win in the opener. The Blues then lost the next four games against the Kings. "We played the best game all year Game 3 in Los Angeles and lost," Hitchcock said. "This is going to be a very long series and were going to have to be better than weve been if we expect to win a game in Chicago." ABOUT THOSE GOALTENDERS: Blues goalie Ryan Miller has been solid since Chicagos three-goal first period in Game 1. He had 25 saves in Saturdays win, and all three of the Blackhawks goals came with traffic in front of the net. Corey Crawford made 48 saves for Chicago in the triple-overtime opener, but he was disappointed with his 27-save performance in Game 2. "He said he needs to be better, and he needs to be better," Quenneville said. ___ AP Sports Writer R.B. DUBLIN, Ohio -- Bubba Watson has been coming to Muirfield Village ever since his rookie year on the PGA Tour. Tyler Myers Jersey . Nine years later, he might have finally figured it out. He had only five rounds in the 60s in his previous eight trips. Even with a bogey on his final hole Saturday, he had a 3-under 69 for his third straight round in the 60s this week. Watson is 11 under on the par 5s, the key to scoring. Best of all, he walked off the course with a one-shot lead over Scott Langley in the Memorial. Not bad for a guy who has never finished better than a tie for 23rd. "Its all about maturity," Watson said. "Thinking around the golf course a lot better -- its my ninth year on tour, so better thinking on the golf course is creating better shots. Hitting a lot more greens. Hitting a lot more fairways. Putting a little better this year. When you add all that up, it turns into better scores. Watson was at 12-under 204 and in position for his third win of the year. "I have a shot," Watson said. "Id like the same score tomorrow and let the boys beat me if they can beat me." Plenty of them should have a chance. With a bogey on the final hole, Watsons lead shrunk to one shot over Langley, who had a 67 to make it an all-southpaw final pairing Sunday. Langley has not been in the final group since his rookie debut two years ago in Honolulu. The most famous Lefty, Phil Mickelson, had a 72 and was 10 shots out of the lead while coping with reports he is involved in a federal investigation of insider trading. Mickelson confirmed that FBI agents approached him after the first round this week. Otherwise, he went about his business on the golf course. "Its not going to change the way I carry myself," Mickelson said. "Honestly, Ive done nothing wrong. Im not going to walk around any other way." Hideki Matsuyama of Japan made birdie on his last hole for a 69 and was two shots behind. Adam Scott, the No. 1 player in the world and coming off a win at the Colonial last week, made eagle on the 15th that sparked another surge up the leaderboard. With a bogey on the last hole, he had a 68 and still was only three shots behind. "Its going to be tough," Scott said about his three-shot deficit to the Masters champion. "Hes playing great this year, and I just have to post a number. Im in a good position where I can possibly post a number, and that makes life a little harder for the leader." The 36-hole leader had a tough enough time. Paul Casey, who started Saturday with a three-shot lead. That was gone in three holes when Watson made a pair of birdie, and Casey missed more than his share of putts that keep rounds together. He ended with a double bogey for a 76. He still was in range, however, part of a large group at 8-under 208 that included Jordan Spieth (67), Charl Schwartzel (67) and Byron Nelson winner Brendon Todd (69). Watson already has won at Riviera and Augusta National this year. He has tried to make it a point of keeping golf fun -- Bubba Golf, he likes to call it -- instead of getting wrapped up in expectations. His performance on the par 5s took a slight hit on the 11th hole when his drive found the water, he chose to lay up because of the front hole location and missed his 12-foot par putt. He followed by missing birdie chances of 7 feet on the 13th hole and 3 1/2 feet on the 14th hole, a chance to build some separation. But he rolled in a 12-foot birdie on the 15th and was back in control until the 18th. Watson pulled his approach well right of the green, and his chip ran through the green and into the fringe against the collar. Using a fairway metal to chip, it appeared that the club moved his ball before the stroke, though Watson says he didnt touch it and television replays made it clear that the ball didnt leave its position. Langley doesnt hit the ball as long as Watson. His game is about efficiency and control, and he has shown that by taking a streak of 40 straight holes without a bogey into the final round. Much like Watson, he saw the simple pleasures of a round at Muirfield Village. "Any time you shoot in the 60s here, pretty happy about it," Langley said. "Tough place." Langley grew up in the Midwest and went to school at Illinois. He has played plenty in the Columbus area in college and says he "never cracked an egg" whether he was at the Scarlett Course at Ohio State or Scioto. The good news for Langley? Muirfield Village is in Dublin. Fake Sabres Jerseys . “Im not sure well get Melky Cabrera at all,” said Gibbons. The 29-year-old left fielder struggled all season with knee and hamstring problems. Cabrera was first on the disabled list from June 27-July 20 with tendinitis in his left knee. Dave Andreychuk Jersey . The 27-year-old forward has informed the Leafs that he will be unable to play in Monday nights home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. https://www.cheapsabres.com/1133v-james-patrick-jersey-sabres.html . - Rookie Tesho Akindele scored three goals and Fabian Castillo added two in FC Dallas 5-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night. The Columbus Blue Jackets will take another shot at the earning the first playoff win in team history on Saturday when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins at CONSOL Energy Center for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Blue Jackets are in the postseason for just the second time in 13 seasons since entering the league as an expansion club in 2000-01. Columbus also qualified for the 2009 playoffs, but was swept by Detroit in four games during the opening round. Columbus actually held a 3-1 lead over Pittsburgh in Game 1 of this best-of- seven series on Wednesday, but the Penguins scored the games final three goals to claim a 4-3 decision and drop the Blue Jackets to 0-5 all-time in postseason contests. Brandon Sutter scored the game-winner for Pittsburgh 8:18 into the third period after his team struggled in the early going. The Blue Jackets built a 3-1 advantage under a minute into the second period, but Pittsburgh, which finished tied for the NHLs top power-play unit in the regular season, netted a pair of power-play goals 45 seconds apart to tie the game less than 2 1/2 minutes into the middle stanza. The Penguins finished 2-for-3 on the power play, while Columbus converted just one of four opportunities with the man advantage. Sutter supplied the winner with a wrister from the right circle, while Marc- Andre Fleury made nine of his 31 saves over the final 20 minutes to help the Pens draw first blood in the series. "The more shots came, the more comfortable I felt," said Fleury, who was making his first postseason start since being pulled in the opening round of Pittsburghs run to the Eastern Conference Finals last spring. "It just feels great to win that one." Beau Bennett and Matt Niskanen each notched a goal and an assist, while Jussi Jokinen also lit the lamp for the Metropolitan Division champion Penguins, who went 5-0-0 against Columbus during the regular season. Buffalo Sabres Shirts. Evgeni Malkin, who sat out Pittsburghs final 11 games with a sprained foot, added a pair of assists, while captain Sidney Crosby picked up a helper in the triumph. Jack Johnson collected a goal and an assist for Columbus, while Derek MacKenzie and Mark Letestu tallied a goal apiece. Sergei Bobrovsky, last seasons Vezina Trophy winner, stopped 28 shots in the setback. "Theres going to be ups and downs throughout a playoff series and theyve only won one game, theyve gotta win four," Johnson said of his team coming back for Game 2 after blowing a two-goal lead. "Its a war of attrition and you cant get down about this." Columbus played Game 1 without forwards Nick Foligno, Nathan Horton and R.J. Umberger, but at least one of those guys will be in the lineup on Saturday as Umberger expects to play for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury on April 6. Foligno will miss Game 2. The team is hopeful that he will be ready for Game 3. A native of the Pittsburgh area, Umberger is eager to skate in another postseason tilt in the Steel City. The 31-year-old did face the Penguins in the 2008 playoffs at the Igloo while still a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. "I grew up going to these playoff games, this was my childhood and earlier in my career I got a chance to play in Mellon Arena," Umberger said. "The atmosphere was great (in Game 1) and Im anxious and really excited to get in there." Foligno originally had been ruled out for Game 2, but he was able to practice on Thursday and is now considered questionable for Saturdays tilt. Horton, meanwhile, will be sidelined until at least the middle of May following abdominal surgery. The series will shift to Columbus following tonights battle. Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at Nationwide Arena and the Blue Jackets also will host Game 4 on Wednesday. ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- The Minnesota Timberwolves had exactly what they wanted -- their best player with an open shot and the game on the line. Harrison Barnes Jersey . Kevin Loves 3-point attempt with 1.9 seconds left bounced off the back rim, sending Minnesota to its first loss of the season in a 93-92 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. "Heck yeah, well take that shot every time," said guard Kevin Martin, who led the Timberwolves with 23 points. "The best power forward in the league with a great look to win the game." Loves 29.7 average going into the game led the league in scoring. Even though he struggled from the field, hitting 8 of 20 shots and scoring 17 points, he was confident his late shot would go down and his team would come all the way back from a 23-point deficit in the third quarter. "More often than not, I believe Im going to make that shot," Love said. "J.J. (Barea) made a good pass and I was in good rhythm, but I just hit the back rim." Even the Cavaliers realized they were fortunate. "Luckily, K-Love missed a shot and we got the stop," said Kyrie Irving, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but committed a career-high nine turnovers and missed two shots down the stretch that would have helped Cleveland extend its lead. The Timberwolves got the lead into single digits several times in the fourth quarter, but still trailed 93-84 with 2:43 remaining. The Cavaliers didnt score again and Minnesota had its opportunity after Irving missed with 15 seconds left. "We finally decided to play some defence in the fourth quarter and gave ourselves a chance to win," said Love, who was named the Western Conference player of the week. "I just didnt convert." Minnesota, which won its first three games, was off to its best start since going 6-0 in 2001-02. C.J. Miles led the Cavaliers with 19 points. Rookie forward Anthony Bennett from Brampton, Ont., taken with the No. 1 pick in the draft, missed all three of his shots and is 0 for 15 from the field this season. His only points have come on two free throws in the season opener. Cavaliers centre Andrew Bynum played 18:40, his longest stint of the season, and scored 10 points with four rebounds. After playing 9:42 in the first half, he returned in the third quarter for the first time in the four games hes played. Bynum, who missed all of last season with injuries to both knees, said before the game hes not sure if he will regain the explosiveness he had earlier in his career. Minnesota trailed 76-61 going into the fourth quarter and cut the margin to nine points early in the period. Two baskets by Miles and a jumper by Bynum pushed the margin to 84-69, but the Timberwolves werent finished, outscoring Cleveland 31-19 in the final period. The Cavaliers avoided a third straight loss after a season-opening 98-94 home victory over Brooklyn. "It was a great learning experience," said Cleveland coach Mike Brown. "Hopefully, we can build off that if were in that position again, especially in the near future." NOTES: Love downplayed his individual award which was announced Monday. "Ill take a 3-0 start over any individual honour, but its cool," he said. "It just shows that if you win, good things happen for everybody." ... Cavaliers F Tristan Thompson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. He scored two points and had four rebounds in 35 minutes Saturday against Indiana. ... The Cavaliers play at Milwaukee on Wednesday. ... The Timberwolves host Golden State on Wednesday. Phil Ford Jersey . The team let Keaton Ellerby, James Wright and Matt Halischuk become unrestricted free agents after declining to make them qualifying offers. Ellerby, 25, appeared in 51 games for the Jets last season and had two goals and four assists. Tom Van Arsdale Jersey . He looked very comfortable Wednesday night. Konerko had a big three-run double and Gordon Beckham homered for the second straight game, leading the Chicago White Sox to an 8-3 victory over the sliding Chicago Cubs. https://www.cheapkingsbasketball.com/1052b-scott-wedman-jersey-kings.html . The win puts Arsenal four points clear of Everton in fourth place with two games to play in the Premier League, a position which would qualify the club for Europes top competition for the 17th straight year.TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the return of Stephen Jackson, the play of Goran Dragic and the surprising Suns, the impact of Brook Lopez and Deron Williams with the Nets, Danny Grangers impending return in Indiana and the key to the Spurs success. 1. STEPHEN JACKSON (Clippers): He departed the Spurs last year under cloudy circumstances yet, in the right situation in certain seasons, he has proven to be both a valuable and very productive/winning player. In my book, worth the risk. With JJ Redick out of the lineup right now, you need offensive firepower and shooting and if hes right, he can bring both. Hes played on good teams and made those teams better. Most importantly, you need a leader/coach that he respects and will hold him accountable. Doc Rivers is that guy. If Jackson wants back in the NBA, hes got the chance now yet hell be expected to do it right and this environment is a good returning spot for him. 2. GORAN DRAGIC (Suns): Did you check out his performance vs. the Lakers Tuesday night? 31 pts and five assists. He ate them up; they couldnt guard him. Hes a crafty guy who is very adept at changing speeds and turning the corner and getting into the lane on you and does a wonderful job keeping his dribble alive to make plays. High energy guy who is always fun to watch. The Suns are 12-9. If the season ended today, theyd be in the playoffs - in the West! No, not the East, the West! Amazing!! 3. BROOK LOPEZ and DERON WILLIAMS (Nets): Amazing what good players can do for you (combined for 49 points on 20-29 shooting vs. Boston). Jason Kidd looks a whole lot more capable when he has these two guys in his lineup. Also nice to have Paul Pierce back on the court. Bottom line, in the weak Atlantic Division/Eastern Conference, as bad as things have been for the Nets with injuries/drama/expectations, if they can get and stay healthy, theyll be a playoff team. And if the chemistry were to ever come around, they could be a pretty dangerous team to play against in an early-round series. 4. DANNY GRANGER (Pacers): Has only played in five games over the past two seasons for a team that has become one of the eliite 3-5 teams in the NBA. Sacramento Kings Store. . Hoping to return this weekend. Hes always been a lead actor in Indy. Paul George is that guy now. Can his ego stay in check and is he willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to help his team in whatever role his coaches devise for him? He can be a huge plus for them if hes willing to do what it takes. Obviously, sitting on the bench and watching his team be one of the best in the league has to humble you a bit yet make you hungry to get out there and do what it takes to be that finishing piece to help your team win a title. His presence on the floor will define how the Pacers chemistry evolves from here. If hes right mentally, they can become really dangerous on every level as a title contender. His scoring ability will make their depth even more of a strength. 5. SAN ANTONIO SPURS: An amazing series of facts about this team were pointed out to me by a few folks Tuesday night. Yes, we all know they have a Hall of Famer/franchise #1 pick in Tim Duncan. Some of the other pieces on the floor in Toronto Tuesday night vs. the Raptors include six second round picks, an undrafted player, a 30th Pick and two 28th picks. Remember what I said a few weeks back about the draft pedigree of the Indiana Pacers, sure you need a really good player but beyond that you MUST have GREAT leadership in the coaching area and the scouting/player evaluation and projection component. Its no secret that the Spurs define that and its a shame more franchises dont stay disciplined and use that model. Many swing for the fences with name guys that dont win for you. In a world of tank nation talk (I respect that you must have elite talent to win), it still comes down to the substance of what you put around an elite player that defines success. Too often, we look for the glitzy big name and reach for the bright lights and the style. In the end, it comes down to so many pieces meshing in an operation and it all comes back to the leadership of your owner, president, GM and coach. You get a good horse with a lousy jockey and hell underperform. Yes, youve got to have the horses, yet you better have the right folks leading the way. It all goes together. ' ' '

ROSEMONT, Ill. Calgary Flames Gear . -- Even as two early power-play goals helped establish a 3-0 lead Toronto Marlies coach Steve Spott said he still felt uneasy Friday. He didnt need to worry. The Marlies never trailed on the way to a 5-2 American Hockey League playoff victory over the Chicago Wolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal. "Its a little bit scary. Youre up 3-0 and two of those goals came pretty early," Spott said. "It definitely didnt feel like a 3-0 game. We knew they were going to come at us, they did." The Marlies used two power-play goals to grab an the early advantage while goaltender Drew MacIntyre turned back 37 shots. "It was a 60-minute effort," Spott said. "All four lines played very hard tonight." Centre Trevor Smith opened the scoring with his first goal of the post-season, a power-play goal on a short backhand at 10:54 of the first period. Toronto converted another power-play chance at 14:55 as centre Peter Holland slipped a backhand over the glove of Wolves goaltender Jake Allen. The teams were at even strength in the second when Greg McKegg scored his second goal of the playoffs at 5:02 with a slapshot for a 3-0 lead. "Once they got up a couple of goals they (played) a little freer, they felt good about themselves and it took us a while to get back on track," said Chicago coach John Anderson. The Wolves got on the board five minutes later as Christian Hanson dumped a short rebound shot past MacIntyre. Chicago winger Michael Davies cut the deficit to 3-2 at 17:26, beating MacIntyre on a one-on-one. Toronto restored a two-goal lead at 3:53 of the third period. Winger Carter Ashton slipped while shooting but his wide, wobbly shot was deflected off Allens stick into the net. The Marlies closed out the Wolves on Sam Carricks fourth post-season goal at 17:19. "There were a couple of mistakes that cost us goals," Spott said. "We didnt get in the shot lane when we should have and had a bad line change in the second period. But beyond those two mistakes I thought we played a pretty thorough road game." Allen finished with 30 saves for Chicago. In two regular season meetings this season, seven-of-eight combined goals by the Wolves and Marlies came on power plays. The Marlies claimed a 3-2 overtime win at Chicago on Jan. 17 while the Wolves had a 2-1 triumph eight days later in Toronto.
