Nik Stauskas was nine years old and already thoroughly smitten with basketball when a chance meeting with Vince Carter sealed his fate. Air Max 200 Scontate . Stauskas and his family were at a Toronto Raptors open practice at the Air Canada Centre when he was plucked out of the crowd to shoot hoops with Carter and Morris Peterson. "He hit a three-pointer on Vince Carter, so Vince tackled him to the ground and gave him a noogie," dad Paul said, laughing. "We got pictures of all of it, it was great. That was the tipping point I think." The sweet-shooting 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., is one of six Canadians at the NBA pre-draft camp this week in Chicago, hoping to catch the favourable eye of league general managers and scouts. The others are Jordan Bachynski of Calgary (Arizona State), Khem Birch of Montreal (UNLV), Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ont. (Syracuse), and Torontos Melvin Ejim (Iowa State) and Dwight Powell (Stanford). You can watch live coverage of the NBA combine on TSN2 and TSN GO on Thursday and Friday at 1pm et/10am pt. Canadian star Andrew Wiggins, considered a top-three prospect in the June 26 draft, isnt attending the combine. Stauskas is part of a growing crop of Canadian kids making their mark on the game. The six-foot-six guard earned Big Ten player of the year in his sophomore — and final — season with Michigan, leading the Wolverines to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournaments Elite Eight. Stauskas, who had a career-best seven three-pointers at Illinois in March, is known for killing defenders with his quick step-back and release. Its ". . . so fast, youre not going to (defend it). Hes quick. Hes like a cat," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said of Stauskas after his teams loss to Michigan in January. Stauskass accuracy was developed over thousands of hours chucking up shots, first in their driveway and then on their custom-made backyard basketball court. The day nine-year-old Stauskas squared off against Carter, Paul Stauskas said his son already "had range. At the time he would shoot with two hands, he only developed his one-handed shot probably when he was 13, 14. So it was more of a chest pass. But he was very accurate doing it." Stauskas first played when he was seven, on a Lithuanian club team in Toronto coached by his uncle Vic Simkus. Even then, he was three inches taller than any kid on the court, so he played centre. He scored four points in first game — a 6-4 victory. "Nik had this big smile on his face, because we were all so enthusiastic, we were cheering for him, Go Nik go! He just had such a good time. Thats kind of what started it," Paul Stauskas said. "And if a kid enjoys doing something, whether theyre golfing or skating or whatever, when you do it enough times, you become really good at it." Stauskas became really good after the family moved to their Mississauga home when he was in Grade 5. His dad wanted to install either a pool, a putting green or a basketball court in the backyard. They went with the court, because Nik was "just so enthusiastic about basketball and went above and beyond the call of duty to work on his game," Paul said. The dad wanted the best for his boys — Nik has an older brother Peter — so had the court installed by a company that specializes in modular sports flooring. The backyard court, the first by this company in Canada, is made of interlocking tiles that both gives the feel of a real court surface, and help prevent ankle problems and shin splints. Good thing, because Stauskas would practically live on that court for the next several years. In the winter, he would plug in a space heater to warm his hands. Its also a good thing, Paul said, that he chose the court over the putting green. "Maybe Id be a much better golfer," he said. "But Im 100 per cent convinced Nik would not be where he is today if we had not done that. "This was just one of those things, he could be by himself and he was just happy as a lark, he didnt need anybody, he could be there for hours, flicking shots. And you know how kids get, they start playing games in their head and they start fantasizing that theyre hitting the last-second shot in an important game. Hed just play games with himself, just very happy." Stauskas shared his backyard shooting exploits online, turning into a bit of a YouTube showman. In one video, shot on Christmas Eve of 2012, Stauskas, in tuque and track suit, dropped 45 of 50 three-point shots. In another, shot on a rainy day last spring, he made good on 70 of 76 attempts — including 46 in a row — in the span of five minutes. That YouTube video has over 500,000 views, and even caught the attention of Stephen Curry. Golden States star guard retweeted the video, and wrote: "3pt contest sometime @NStauskas11 ????? this is Impressive." Stauskas tweeted: "I love waking up to a challenge by the best 3 point shooter in the world!!! Today might be a good day HA!" The Canadian quickly gained a fan following in his rookie year at Michigan. Paul Stauskas remembers it was a couple of tuba players on the school band that came up with the maize-and-blue version of the Maple Leaf that flew at games in Ann Arbor. The tuba players then created a T-shirt with the maize-and-blue flag. Underneath the Maple Leaf it read: "The best Canadian import since Molsons." For a pre-season game this past winter, Paul Stauskas and 50 friends, neighbours and family members chartered a Greyhound bus from Mississauga to Ann Arbor. They all wore the T-shirts. "We were the Nik Stauskas cheering section," Paul said. He and his wife Ruta were regulars at Wolverines games, attending about 15 games in each of Niks two seasons. "Weve followed him all over the country, to Atlanta, to Dallas, all over the place, and those road trips for us were a ton of fun," Paul said. "The whole point is, my wife and I, were financially secure. We never needed our kids to Oh youve got to get this good job to get me out of a bad situation, go pro. It was always just having family fun. And Nik just happened to be really good at what he was doing. "Its been fun, the entire ride. You think Disneyland is fun. This is a helluva ride." The family is happily buckling up for what lies ahead. Most mock drafts have Stauskas going anywhere from 11th to 14th (Denver, Orlando, Minnesota and Phoenix). Next seasons NBA rookie scale has the No. 11 pick getting paid just under US$1.9 million in the first year. "Its really exciting to think of the teams he might play on, and the players he might play with and against," Paul Stauskas said. "Nik has idolized LeBron James from the second LeBron stepped on the court. I was just saying to Nik Nik youre going to be playing against him! "The first time he steps out on the court, and he plays against LeBron, I think hes going to be shell-shocked. Hes probably going to go up to him and ask him for his autograph," he added, laughing. Paul Stauskas cant help but imagine the possible roster permutations. Hes heard the Chicago Bulls — who have the No. 16 pick — might like his son. "We were sitting there thinking Can you imagine Nik, youre playing with (Derrick) Rose? WOW. . . I can just hear it now: Rose to Skauskas, Stauskas back to Rose, OH AND ITS INNNN! That would be fantastic." He thinks Boston — which has both a lottery pick and the No. 17 pick — would be a good fit. "With Rajon Rondo there, I can imagine Nik playing with Rondo," Paul said. "When Rondo first came in the league, both me and Nik saw his very first game and we looked at each other and we go, Wow, is this guy good. So imagine we see this guy and a few years later (Niks) playing side-by-side with him. Its crazy." Rowan Barrett, the assistant GM of Canadas mens basketball program, saw Stauskas play in high school when he was a 15-year-old at Mississaugas Loyola Catholic School. "It was clear that there was talent, there was ability," Barrett said. "The keys you wanted to know were: What was his mind like? And how much would he be willing to work at it? The great thing is he is excellent in both of those areas. Tremendous work ethic and definitely has the mind of a winner. You put those things together with size and length and skill, and you can find yourself a pretty good basketball player. "Im very excited for him." Wiggins, Ennis and Stauskas are all projected lottery picks, which would make this years draft the most successful, in terms of numbers, in Canadian history. Anthony Bennett became the first Canadian to be picked No. 1 overall when he went to Cleveland last year. Canadian Kelly Olynyk (Boston Celtics) was the 13th pick last year. Barrett, 41, said the Canadian growth in the game is a product of opportunities and exposure that werent there when he was growing up in Toronto. "Night and day," Barrett said comparing the generations. Wiggins, Stauskas and Ennis grew up watching the Raptors. Barrett aspired to be a track and field athlete. "I played many of the sports but at that time in Canada, you just had some tremendous athletes in track and field who were bringing home medals from Olympics Games. So those athletes were the ones you wanted to emulate," Barrett said. "But a funny thing happened, I kept growing. "Its a tremendous environment right now for these kids." He threw in the occasional fastball to keep batters off balance. The Cubs struggled at the plate with the Milwaukee Brewers veteran locked in with his slider and sinker. Lohse allowed just three hits in a complete game shutout, and Ryan Braun had a two-run homer in the first inning of a 9-0 rout against the Cubs on Sunday. Milwaukee pounded Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija (1-5) for eight earned runs in three innings, raising his ERA from 1.68 to 2.54. "I figured it would be low-scoring on both ends. I knew Kyle had a good chance of keeping them down and I didnt expect to get a lot of runs off Samardzija. Great offence," manager Ron Roenicke said. Braun homered to left on the first pitch he saw from Samardzija, and the Brewers rolled from there with Samardzija having trouble locating his fastball. Lyle Overbay broke the game open with a three-run double in the third. Even Lohse had success at the plate with an RBI single to drive in Overbay to make it 8-0 for the pitchers second run-scoring hit of the game. Lohse (7-1) needed just 93 pitches in tossing his eighth career shutout. "Its fun to go out there and help out, add on, but thats not my main job," Lohse said about his 2 for 3 day with the bat. "My main job was to go out there and get us deep in the game, and I take a little more pride in that." With Lohses pitch count at just 83 pitches after eight innings, Roenicke wasnt even thinking about pulling the veteran. "I didnt even go talk to him. When you see that kind of game and the pitch count that low, its impressive," the skipper said. One of the few highlights for Chicago was Brian Schlitters single to lead off the seventh for the relievers first major league hit. Otherwise it was a frustrating day for the last-place Cubs. They lost their 14th straight series on the road, a streak dating to last September. Samardzijas "command wasnt the bbest today, but it was just one of those days for him," manager Rick Renteria said. Air Max Scontate. "I think very rare." The eight earned runs allowed were as many as Samardzija had given up in his previous six starts. Scooter Gennett had two doubles off Samardzija before hitting his third homer of the year in the fifth off reliever Justin Grimm. Gennetts first double exemplified the Cubs afternoon. A high fly to shallow left-centre in the second fell in between backpedaling shortstop Starlin Castro and charging outfielder Junior Lake, who looked away in frustration as Gennett hustled into second. "You have to take advantage of mistakes against a good pitcher like that. When a team makes mistakes like that, you have to jump on it," Braun said. Two innings later, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was ejected by home plate umpire Jerry Meals for arguing a called third strike and Chicago trailing by eight. The left-handed slugger turned to face Meals and pointed angrily with his left arm at the ground before being sent back to the dugout by Renteria. "I said my peace and I definitely understand why I got ejected," Rizzo said. "Im going to move on." Braun hit his ninth homer of the year and second in three days. The Brewers hope it might be a sign that hes over the right oblique injury that sidelined him for two weeks in May. Notes: Chicago planned to give Luis Valbuena a couple days off as a precaution after Renteria said the infielder was "a little tired, a little sore" with what he described as an abdominal ailment. ... Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez (hamstring) went 0 for 2 and fielded a grounder in four innings in his first game of a two-day rehab stint at the teams Class A affiliate in Appleton. ... ... Chicago is off Monday and opens a three-game series Tuesday against the visiting New York Mets. RH Matt Garza (2-4) starts Monday when Milwaukee welcomes the Minnesota Twins for a two-game series. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. A. J. Cole Jersey .ca. Hi Kerry, In the final minute of the third period last night, it looked like the Kings may have had too many men on the ice during a line change - but there was no call. It was pretty close to overtime, so it might have made a huge difference in the outcome of the game. Did you see it? - Andrew R., Thornhill, ON Hi Andrew: Yes I did see the uncalled Kings too many men on the ice infraction with 21 seconds remaining in regulation time. Although there was no mention of the Kings violation of Rule 74 on either the NBC or CBC broadcasts you and I werent the only ones that caught it Andrew, as I received a tweet from Greg Williams (one of my followers on Twitter) questioning the play as well. For those that didnt observe it, let me share exactly what transpired. This too many men on the ice infraction committed by the Kings was as much of an "automatic call" as the one made a minute and three seconds earlier on Brian Boyle of the Rangers when he was penalized for a slash that broke the stick of Dwight King. There was great end-to-end action and scoring opportunities for both teams with under a minute to play in regulation time that were only thwarted through superb saves by Jonathan Quick on Carl Hagelin and Henrik Lunqvist on a Jeff Carter wraparound. After some sustained pressure by the Kings following the Carter scoring opportunity, the puck exited the Rangers zone and beyond the centre red line off the skate of Hagelin. As Alec Martinez went back to retrieve the puck on the penalty box side of the ice, Drew Doughty sauntered toward the Kings bench on the opposite side of the ice for a change following another energized shift by the potential Conn Smythe Trophy winner. With 22.7 seconds on the clock both Doughty and his replacement, Slava Voynov, were physically on the ice within five feet of the bench in what would determined as a legal line change as Martinez gained control of the puck midway between the red line and the Kings blue line. Two tenths of a second later (22.5) Martinez looked to his right and toward Voynov to throw a cross-ice pass. Voynov received the puck on his stick approximately 20 feet from his players bench at 20.9 seconds on the clock and with both of Doughtys skates clearly on the ice and preparing to climb over the boards. If we freeze frame it in this moment a clear violation of Rule 74.1 was committed requiring an immediate whistle and a bench minor assessed to the LA Kings for too many men on the ice. (Rule 74.1—If in the course of making a substitution, either the player entering the game or the player retiring from the ice surface plays the puck with his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical contact with an opposing player while either the player entering the game or the retiring player is actually on the ice, then the infraction of "too many men on the ice" will be called.) Both linesmen appeared to have had unobstructed views from their respective positions to follow the line change, up to and including the point when Voynov played the puck while Doughty was still physically on the ice. Even though this is primarily a linesmans call to make, one of the referees was positioned near the Kings bench inside the blue line and might very well have had a sightline on the change at the bench. This "automatic" call was not made and Voynov carried the puck through the neutral zone and led the attack. We cant be certain if a penalty call on this play would have changed the outcome of the game Andrew. What we can be certain of is that if a penalty had been called the teams would have played four-on-four until Brian Boyles penalty expired 24 seconds into overtime - at which point the Rangers would have enjoyed the benefit of a power-play for one minute and sixteen seconds. Bob Lemon Indians Jersey . Maximilian Arnold put Wolfsburg ahead in the eighth minute, when the stationary Fallou Diagne allowed him to guide Patrick Ochs cross beyond the helpless Freiburg goalkeeper, and Ivica Olic doubled the lead three minutes later after Luiz Gustavo did well to set him up. But the schedule doesnt shape up as all that fortunate down the stretch. The 5-7 Falcons are now atop the dismal NFC South division in advance of their trip north to face the powerful Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Monday Night Football. And win or lose in Titletown, Atlanta will remain in control of its own destiny because of a perfect 4-0 record inside the division, along with a looming Week 16 matchup at the Saints, who fell back to 5-8 after Sundays setback to Carolina. If you look ahead, however, you can see things figure to get far stickier for the Falcons starting tonight. While Atlanta has to battle the Packers, who are 6-0 at home this season, New Orleans will face opponents who currently have a 12-26 mark the rest of the way. Conversely, the Falcons face three teams with playoff aspirations (The Pack, Pittsburgh and New Orleans) before finishing off with the now 4-8-1 Panthers. Both the Saints and Atlanta are attempting to avoid joining the 2010 Seattle Seahawks as being the only NFL teams to win a division with a sub-.500 record. The Falcons have won three of four overall, including a big 29-18 win over the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals in Week 13 action at the Georgia Dome. Matt Bryant connected on all five of his field-goal attempts in that one and Matt Ryan finished with a season-high 361 yards on 30-of-41 passing with scoring throws to Julio Jones and Levine Toilolo. Jones led all receivers thanks to 189 yards on 10 receptions, Harry Douglas added 116 yards on nine grabs, and Steven Jackson contributed 101 yards on 18 carries. Arizona signal caller Drew Stanton was picked off twice by the much-maligned Atlanta defense, once by Josh Wilson and another by Dwight Lowery. The Packers, meanwhile, took another step toward what would be a franchise- record fourth consecutive division title when they outlasted the New England Patriots, 26-21, in a game that could have foreshadowed Super Bowl XLIX. MVP candidate Aaron Rodgers threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns and kept two NFL-record streaks alive as he outdueled Tom Brady and the Pats. Rodgers was 24-of-38 and has now thrown 360 consecutive passes with 31 touchdowns since his last interception at home, which was over two calendar years ago. Eddie Lacy rushed 21 times for 98 yards and caught two passes for another 17, stretching his Green Bay running back record to four consecutive games with at least 100 yards from scrimmage. Davante Adams had six receptions for 121 yards and Randall Cobb made seven catches for 85 as the Packers ran their winning streak to four games since their bye week. Weve been great at home, said Rodgers. The fans have been excellent with the noise and weve got a good advantage with it. Weve just got to keep rolling. Green Bay leads its all-time series with Atlanta by a 14-12 margin, including a 22-21 win at Lambeau last season while Rodgers was out with a broken collarbone. On Monday nights the Falcons have been dismal historically, compiling a 10-26 mark. The Packers are also underwater but much better at 28-31-1. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Rodgers has thrown for 20 touchdowns without an interception at home this season. Overall, the All-Pro leads the NFL with a 118.6 passer rating and has thrown for 32 scores against just three INTs, captaining a team that scoress 31. Dean Chance Jersey. 7 points per game, the best mark in the league. In his four previous career meetings against the Falcons Rodgers has always crossed the 300-yard barrier throwing the ball and has nine TDs against just one INT. Its a big challenge for us this week with Aaron Rodgers, Falcons coach Mike Smith admitted. No doubt, hes playing the best of any quarterback in the NFL right now. Hes got a number of weapons he can get it to. Hes played extremely well at home. I dont think hes thrown an interception at home this season, and I dont even want to talk about how many points theyve scored. The answer to that is 40.9 points while outscoring foes 245 to 106 at Lambeau. I dont know that theres been a quarterback thats had a stretch like hes had in the history of the NFL, Smith continued. Rodgers finished November with 1,233 yards passing with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions for an NFL-best 128.1 passer rating. And more importantly a 4-0 record. No disrespect to any quarterback in the NFL, but right now hes at a level that is much higher than anybody else, Smith said. When you look at his pure statistics, theyre phenomenal. The key to Green Bay at home has been blitzing people out of the starting blocks. The Packers have outscored their opponents by an amazing 79-0 margin in the first quarter of their last five home contests. That number expands to 151-23 at halftime and 14 of those 23 points were scored by the powerful Patriots last week. Foes have been looking up and finding the score 14-0, or in the case of the Pats 13-0, and that has enabled a flawed Packers defense to excel as teams become more one-dimensional. Despite some talent issues on the defensive side Green Bay has allowed just 17.3 ppg in its current four-game winning streak. When you watch the tape, its even more impressive, Smith said. (Rodgers has) got a great grasp of how to attack defenses. Hes extending plays. If he can extend the play and when the play gets off schedule, he can make the throws. Hes been very accurate. His quarterback rating is off the charts. You would think the only way Atlanta can beat the Packers is in a shootout and Ryan isnt too shabby himself, currently second in the NFL with 3,427 passing yards, slightly ahead of Rodgers 3,325. The veteran also has 21 TD passes versus 10 interceptions and a solid 93.7 passer rating. Jones, meanwhile, is one of the best receivers in the game as evidenced last week when he torched the highly-regarded Patrick Peterson time and time again. The Falcons could also get a boost from the potential return of Jones regular running mate, Roddy White, who sat out last week with an ankle problem. Roddy was close to playing (last week), Smith said. He worked with our athletic performance guys late in the week. We felt that it was in the best interest long term for him to not play in the game this past week. We anticipate, with the extra day, that hell be ready to go this week. OVERALL ANALYSIS Rarely is a division leader favored by double digits over another division leader but thats the story here and its hard to imagine a team with so many issues on defense like the Falcons solving Rodgers at Lambeau. We have some big goals, and were getting into December football now with a chance with everything right in front of us, A-Rod said. Expect the Packers to keep rolling here. Sports Network predicted outcome: Packers 34, Falcons 20 ' ' '

The Calgary Stampeders running back received the West Division nomination for the CFLs top individual award Thursday in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada and leagues eight head coaches.TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on Anthony Bennetts big game, the skills of Jeff Teague, the performance of Nick Calathes, the energy of Joakim Noah and the compete level of Amir Johnson. 1. Anthony Bennett (Cavs): Congrats! Finally. Its been a very frustrating and disappointing rookie campaign for the young Canadian out of UNLV. The Cavs have won three in a row after an embarrassing loss at home to the undermanned Lakers and firing their GM Chris Grant. A wake up call? Maybe. For Bennett, its got to feel good and hopefully the fact that hes rounding back into shape will help his confidence and he relaxes and plays his game. Lots of pressure being the #1 overall pick in the draft to say the least. 2. Jeff Teague (Hawks): For the Raptors to win Wednesday, they have to control this guy at the point of attack. Hes terrific at getting into the lane and outplayed Kyle Lowry in their first meeting back in early November. Hes had a nice season at 15.7ppg and 7.3 apg. Lightning quick and he changes speeds really well. Gets into the lane almost at will. His penetration and ball-hawking skills defensively will be factors to watch. 3. Nick Calathes (Grizzlies): Awesome job filling in at the point guard spot vs. the Wizards Tuesday night with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Not a bad performance at all. Loved how he played with great poise at the end of the game vs. John Wall and concentrated on getting his team organized in their half-court offence and getting the ball to their two bigs and playing the power game. He really impressed me with his command of the game plan. Nice pick for them. 4. Joakim Noah (Bulls): Fabulous game Tuesday night vs. the Hawks. Watched the game and was blown way by the energy he had and the impact he had on the game. Posted a triple-double with 19 points, 16 boards and 11 assists. He competes at the top of the llist for players in the NBA; not many that play harder in the entire league. Fake Jerseys. A winner. With the Raptors currently (big game Wednesday vs. Hawks) in the third seed right now in the East with the Bulls, Hawks and Wizards occupying the 3-6 range of the East, the team I fear the most for a first round matchup for the Raptors is the Bulls. In spite of Derrick Rose being out and Luol Deng being traded, this team has what it takes to win in the playoffs and grind the game to a screeching halt and make you play ugly. For a young Raptors team in their first playoff series, this would be a matchup Id prefer they avoid. I know the Raptors have beaten them two of the first three games theyve played this year (they play again on next Wednesday in Toronto, coming off a back-to-back with Washington) but just ask last years Nets if you want to deal with the Bulls in the playoffs. Led by Noah, this club gets after you at a level in the playoffs that takes some getting used to. 5. Amir Johnson (Raptors): One of my all-time favorite Raptors. Not sure if hell play vs. the Hawks Wednesday but hes always been a gamer and wonderful competitor. The All-Star Break couldnt come at a better time for him than now. He needs the break to heal his injuries and fatigued body. He gives it his all for you and I respect that. I think hed be the first to tell you that he needs to play better and with more consistency down the stretch for the Raptors to be Atlantic Division champs and to also secure the third seed. If you watch the Raptors enough, its pretty obvious that when Johnson and Terrence Ross are going good and compliment Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Jonas and the bench, this team can play with anyone in the league. The night in and night out high level performance of Johnson and Ross, in my eyes, is the key to this team making a run here down the stretch. Consistency needed. ' ' '

According to Dave Stubbs of The Montreal Gazette, preliminary talks have begun between Markov - an unrestricted free agent this summer - and general manager Marc Bergevin.WINNIPEG -- B.C.s Adam Bighill had the game of his life Friday as he helped force at least three turnovers on the way to a 53-17 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and lock down a playoff spot for the Lions. "Thats probably stats-wise one of the most impressive professional games Ive ever played," he said. "Its not something you go out there and try to do. You just go out there and play every down and what happens happens." The first quarter was a comedy of errors for the Bombers, who opened with a turnover as Will Ford bobbled a lateral from quarterback Max Hall on his first play of the game. Bighill, a linebacker, snatched it up in the scramble and took it 30 yards for the Lions first touchdown. One way or another, the Lions defence accounted for most of their points, with three touchdowns in the first half alone. "The defence putting up points like that, it doesnt come very often," said Bighill. That first was just one of seven turnovers for the Bombers (2-11), who had two touchdowns from Clarence Denmark and a field goal from Sandro DeAngelis. Bighill, Nick Moore, Dante Marsh, Cord Parks, Andrew Harris and quarterback Thomas DeMarco had touchdowns for the Lions (9-4). Paul McCallum added three field goals and a couple of singles. DeMarco said the big thing is locking up the playoff spot. "We played a tremendous game, offence, defence and special teams," said the backup, after just his second start and second win since replacing an injured Travis Lulay. "Were heading in the right direction and its just one more win to where we want to go." It was unpleasant all around for the Bombers and their fans, many of whom left early on a cool night with sporadic showers. Buck Pierce got the biggest cheer of the night when he took over from DeMarco in the third quarter. Winnipeg traded Pierce to B.C. at mid-season. Joey Elliott, cut by the Bombers as well before the season started, also saw a little action late in the game for the Lions. The Bombers poor play hasnt helped but a cool night and showers also left the stands emptier than they have been all season. Winnipegs defence was far more effective than the Bombers offence and defensive back Brandon Stewart was clearly frustrated. "We did everything that we could do. We gave them multiple chances on offence," he said. "Defensively we could do notthing but watch it. Bryce Love Jersey. Were on the sidelines. We cant run off the sidelines and go out and tackle people." Coach Tim Burke said the defence played hard. "They were getting banged up but they hung in there." But he had nothing good to say about his offence. "It was pathetic." The Bombers have maintained at least a veneer of optimism in the CFL East where they have maintained a mathematical chance of making the playoffs. But that too slipped Friday night. "You keep playing for something," said veteran offensive lineman Glenn January. "If the playoff picture is out of the question now youve got to play for your jobs, youve got to play for your paycheque, youve got to play for your family back home watching you, youve got to play for the name on the back of your jersey." Things looked up briefly in the first quarter for the Bombers after Hall executed a four-play 54-yard drive and connected with Denmark to tie it less than three minutes later. But a coverage gap let DeMarco cap his own short drive with a throw to a wide-open Moore, who strolled into the end zone. The Bombers werent done with first-quarter gaffes. Ford and Denmark were back to take the kick and basically just watched McCallums 80-yarder bounce between them for a single. Hall was intercepted in the second quarter on his own 28-yard line, which set up McCallums 34-yard field goal at 9:24 to make it 18-7. A little over five minutes later Hall was closing in on the B.C. goal line when he was intercepted again and Dante Marsh returned it 79 yards for another touchdown. Another single on a 50-yard punt from McCallum made it 26-7 and then Akeem Foster fumbled a pass from Hall and set up Parks 45-yard touchdown return. With about a minute left in the first half, though, Hall connected with Denmark again with a 35-yarder to make it 33-14. Jason Boltus came in for Hall in the second half and on his first play threw an interception that led to DeMarcos one-yard run for B.C.s second offensive touchdown. Harris made it 47-14 with a 16-yard run just before the third quarter ended. Boltus fumbled on a throw on his own 11-yard line to set up McCallums 12-yard field goal. DeAngelis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 5:49 left to make it 50-17 but McCallum added another three points for the Lions as well with about a minute and a half left. ' ' '

North Carolina coach Roy Williams denied allegations of academic wrongdoing Friday by former player Rashad McCants connected to the schools long-running academic scandal. Colorado Rockies Pro Shop . In an interview with ESPNs "Outside the Lines" to air Friday, McCants -- the second-leading scorer on Williams first NCAA championship team in 2005 -- said tutors wrote papers for him and that Williams knew about no-show classes popular with athletes. "I thought it was a part of the college experience, just like watching it on a movie from He Got Game or Blue Chips," McCants said. "... When you get to college, you dont go to class, you dont do nothing, you just show up and play. Thats exactly how it was, you know, and I think that was the tradition of college basketball, or college, period, any sport. Youre not there to get an education, though they tell you that. "Youre there to make revenue for the college. Youre there to put fans in the seats. Youre there to bring prestige to the university by winning games." McCants also said Williams told him he could swap a failing grade from one class with a passing one from another to stay eligible during the 2004-05 season, according to the report. He entered the NBA draft as a junior after that season. "I strongly disagree with what Rashad has said," Williams said in a statement Friday. "In no way did I know about or do anything close to what he says and I think the players whom I have coached over the years will agree with me. "I have spent 63 years on this earth trying to do things the right way and the picture he portrays is not fair to the University or me." McCants comments are the latest allegations levied against UNC in an academic fraud scandal that began as an offshoot of an NCAA investigation into the football program beginning in summer 2010. Those findings centred on the formerly named Department of African and Afro-American Studies, most notably with lecture classes featuring significant athlete enrollments that did not meet and were instead treated as independent study courses requiring only a research paper at semesters end. Former UNC learning specialist Mary Willingham, who has questioned the literacy of Tar Heel athletes, has said "paper classes" were designed to keep players eligible despite many reading at below-grade levels. The fraud findings also unauthorized grade changes and possibly forged signatures on grade rolls. By 2012, an investigation led by former Gov. Jim Martin found the problems in the AFAM department ran back at least to the late 1990s. That probe found no evidence of athletic department involvement, though another probe led by former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein is underway. Rockies Jerseys 2019 . He played the first 10 holes in 4 under and briefly grabbed a share of the lead at 13 under with an eagle on the 16th hole, but three-putted for bogey on the 17th to fall back. Russ Cochran took advantage of a swing adjustment to shooting the best round of the tournament, an 8-under 64 that left him in a tie for sixth at 10 under. "I got up on my toes more," Cochran said. "Seems like a little thing, but it seemed like it did the trick." Colin Montgomerie was 10 under after a 70. Hale Irwin matched his age with a 69 to tie for 39th at 3 under. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork. Rockies Jerseys 2019 .com) - Drew Hutchison is coming off one of the best starts in his young career and will look to build on that when the Toronto Blue Jays battle the struggling Boston Red Sox in game two of their three game set at Fenway Park. Clay Buchholz will be on the mound for Boston who fell to Toronto 7-4 on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays have won six of eight while the Red Sox have dropped five in a row. Hutchison went the distance for his first shutout on Friday, defeating Texas, 2-0, while surrendering just three hits. Hes faced the Red Sox once, in Toronto, and won a 5-1 decision after pitching seven innings in June 2012. Buchholz was 12-1 in the turnaround 2013 season that yielded a World Series championship. Hes lost three of five decisions thus far in 2014 while posting an ugly 6.17 earned run average. In his last start, on Thursday at Minnesota, Buchholz gave up three runs in six innings in a game the Red Sox ultimately lost, 4-3, in 10 innings. He downed Toronto, 7-6, in April and is 10-5 in 18 career starts against the Blue Jays, though just two of those wins have come over seven starts in the series at Fenway Park. On Tuesday, Edwin Encarnacion hit two of Torontos four home runs, accounting for four RBI, as the Blue Jays took down Boston in the opener. Melky Cabrera ended up 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two runs batted in and three scored for the Jays. Erik Kratz also went deep for the visitors. J.A. Happ (3-1) allowed four runs on seven hits while fanning six and walking two over five-plus innings. Casey Janssen worked out of a jam in the ninth for his fourth save. Jonny Gomes finished 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia and Jackie Bradley each drove in a run, too. Felix Doubront (2-4) was tagged in the setback for five hits and as many runs while not surviving the fifth inning. Boston took two of three from the Jays earlier in the year. Boston dropped a 7-4 decision in Tuesdays opener for its fifth straight loss. It hasnt lost six consecutive games since the end of 2012, when it closed the season with eight straight defeats. Durham, NC (SportsNetwork. Chuck Bednarik Youth Jersey .com) - Jahlil Okafor totaled 24 points and eight rebounds as No. 2 Duke remained perfect with an 84-55 decision over Wofford at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Justise Winslow added 16 points and Quinn Cook picked up 15 for the Blue Devils (12-0), who will put their unblemished record on the line in their ACC opener on Saturday against Boston College. We played well and we beat a really good team today. Theyre a hard team to defend, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. We played so hard in the second half and so together. Im really pleased with the result. Karl Cochran posted 13 points and five rebounds for the Terriers (9-4), who also begin their conference slate three days from now. I was really proud, Wofford head coach Mike Young said. I cant say there have been many times in my career when we got our fannies whipped by 29 or whatever it was and I was proud. After four ties, the visitors led only once in the contest, 15-14, with just over nine minutes gone in the first half after Cochran drained a triple. Duke surged ahead with the next eight points and largely maintained that close margin through intermission. Another Cochran triple pulled Wofford within 26-24, but a three-point play by Okafor provided breathing room and the Blue Devils went to the break up 41-34. Amile Jeffersons shot provided the hosts a 48-34 edge less than two minutes into the second half. Eric Garcias bucket made it 52-43 just over two minutes later, but Duke embarked on an 11-2 run to put away its challengers for good. Jefferson capped the surge at 63-45 with 10:21 remaining after grabbing a defensive board off a Spencer Collins miss from long distance then taking it the length of the floor for a layup. Duke refused to take its foot off the gas in the latter stages, and back-to- back threes by Grayson Allen and Cook capped the rout. Game Notes Duke extended its streak to 116 victories over non-conference opponents on its home floor ... Wofford fell to 0-21 all-time against nationally-ranked foes ... Okafor was 11-of-13 from the floor, but missed three of his five chances at the free-throw line ... The Terriers handed out just nine assists and committed 13 turnovers. Sweezy was the one part of the Seattle Seahawks offensive line that had avoided injuries or having to change positions this season.NEW YORK -- Big league pitchers might feel safer on the mound this season. Major League Baseball has approved a protective cap for pitchers, hoping to reduce the damage from line drives to head that have brought some terrifying and bloody scenes in the last few years. The heavier and bigger new hat was introduced Tuesday and will be available for testing during spring training on a voluntary basis. Major leaguers and minor leaguers wont be required to wear it -- comfort is likely to be a primary concern. "Obviously, itd be a change," two-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers told the MLB Network. "Im definitely not opposed to it." "I think itd take a lot of getting used to," he said. "You dont look very cool, Ill be honest." The safety plates made by isoBLOX are sewn into the hat and custom fitted. They weigh an extra six to seven ounces -- a baseball weighs about five ounces, by comparison -- and offer protection to the forehead, temples and sides of the head. Theyll make the hats about a half-inch thicker in the front and around an inch wider on the sides. Several pitchers have been hit in the head by line drives in the recent seasons. Brandon McCarthy sustained a brain contusion and skull fracture after being struck in 2012 and Doug Fister was hit during the World Series that October. Torontos J.A. Happ and Tampa Bays Alex Cobb were sidelined after being hit last year. McCarthy tweeted that he had already tried out the fortified cap and that it was "headed in right direction but not game ready." Said Arizona reliever Brad Ziegler: "I think theyre on the right track, but the hat they approved isnt remotely close to comfortable enough to wear in games." In an email to The Associated Press, he said, "If youre not 100 per cent focused on executing your pitches, you have almost no chance of success. And that hat is uncomfortable enough that it would be a big distraction to wear it." "We talked to a lot of guys who had been through this, and they provided a wealth of information to help us," said Bruce Foster, CEO of the 4Licensing Corporation, parent company of isoBLOX. "We went through a myriad of different designs to develop this." Foster said the cap went through extensive testing and provided protection from line drives up to 90 mph in the front of the head and 85 mph on the side. Line drives in the majors have been clocked at even faster rates. While the hat is "slightly bigger" than a regular baseball cap, Foster said: "Its not going to be a Gazoo hat." Several years ago, MLB introduced larger batting helmets that offered increased safety. But big leaguers mostly rejected them, saying they looked funny and made them resemble the Great Gazoo, a character on the "The Fllintstones" cartoon series. Jerome Brown Youth Jersey. In recent seasons, pitchers have said they would try padded caps, provided they werent too cumbersome. "You see guys get hit with line drives. I know in the last couple of years there have been several of them. So it happens. You want to be wary of it," All-Star closer Glen Perkins of the Minnesota Twins said. "Player safety is important. I think finding a solution is good." "But by the sounds of what they have, I dont know if thats entirely feasible to go out there with basically a helmet on your head and pitch. Without seeing it or trying it on, I hate to make a blanket judgment. But just thinking out loud, that seems a little bit much. Just the bulkiness," he said. In December 2012, MLB medical director Dr. Gary Green presented ideas on protective headgear to executives, doctors and trainers. The prototypes under study included some made of Kevlar, the high-impact material often worn by military and law enforcement and NFL players. Several companies tried without success to make a product that would be approved by MLB and the players union. While isoBLOX was first to get the OK, other firms still might submit proposals. Foster said the caps design diffuses the impact of being hit, rather than only absorbing the shock. The technology will be available on the retail market for ballplayers of all ages in a form of a skull cap. A memo from MLB will advise teams that the caps are available in spring training, and pitchers who express interest in testing will be fitted. MLB can require minor leaguers to wear it, but has no plans now to do that. "I think it will be one of those things that people will wear them when they have to wear them. Maybe a guy here or a guy there," Perkins said. Star closer Grant Balfour said, "I am always appreciative of anything that will make the game safer. That being said, I may try it. Just not sure yet until I see it. Has to fit with a cap and be comfortable." MLB didnt make the use of helmets or protective cap inserts mandatory for batters until the National League required them for the 1956 season. Helmets werent required until the 1971 season and, even then, they werent mandatory for players already in the big leagues. An earflap on the side of the head facing the pitcher was required for new players starting in 1983. "Its nice to see any sport take precautions to prevent injury," San Francisco reliever Javier Lopez said. "That being said, I look forward to seeing what the finished product looks like. And if it helps just one pitcher, then its worth it. Its always nice to have safety nets." Added Boston reliever Craig Breslow: "Im not certain how many players will be testing the new equipment, but I think all at least appreciate the effort. " ' ' '

DALLAS - Trevor Daley admitted he had a here we go again feeling during the second period on Saturday night. Wholesale White Sox Jerseys .The Dallas Stars defenceman had seen his team lose leads and then lose games, including five in overtime at home this season. But after the New Jersey Devils tied Saturdays game after trailing by two goals, Daley did something about it.Daley and Shawn Horcoff scored late in the second period to help the Stars recover and beat the Devils 4-3.Definitely, Daley said of having bad feelings about a repeat. That seemed to be the way its been going, but we feel if we work hard, were going to get results.Tonight was one of those games.Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza each had a goal and an assist in the first period for the Stars, and Kari Lehtonen finished with 28 saves.Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas and Scott Gomez scored for the Devils.Cory Schneider stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced through two periods. Keith Kinkaid replaced Schneider to start the third and finished with three saves before being pulled for a sixth skater.I didnt blame (Schneider) for us being in the hole we were in, Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. That wasnt the reason.Merrill and Gelinas scored 3:20 apart to tie the score at 2-all at 7:46 of the second period.Daley got the tiebreaker with 5:05 left in the period and Horcoff restored the two-goal lead less than 2 minutes later. The Devils pulled to 4-3 when Gomez put in a rebound with 1:07 remaining in the third with a sixth skater on the ice.We pushed to the end, DeBoer said. It wasnt enough. The Devils outshot Dallas 11-3 in the third period, and kept the pressure on in the Stars end until the game ended.Horcoff said, I told (Spezza), Thats one way to do it. Just drop down on two knees, cover (the puck) and hang on. A lot of times, thats the best place for it to be, is under that pile.Dallas took a 1-0 lead on Seguins NHL-leading 23rd goal with 5:31 to go in the first. Erik Cole sent an easy pass into the top of the slot, and Seguin one-timed the puck past Schneider. The goal was Seguins fifth in the last four games and 16th in the last 16.Seguin assisted 2 1/2 minutes later as Spezza tried to put the puck into the right side of the net, retrieved it and attempted a wraparound shot from the left side, and then got the puck back and lifted it into the upper left corner.I thought we really dominated, even after 40 minutes, the possession, the shot, the chances, Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. It turns out the Magic werent quite done turning heads. Victor Oladipo had 23 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, and the Magic rallied to surprise East-leading Indiana Pacers 93-92 on Sunday night. Indiana stole Orlandos inbounds pass with nine seconds left and Paul George was able to get off a 20-foot jumper. But it came up short and was rebounded by the Magic, who ran out the clock. "Today going into the fourth quarter (coach Jacque Vaughn) just simply told us whoever plays hard is going to win the game. If you really want to win youll play harder than them," said Oladipo, who played the entire fourth quarter for the second consecutive game. "That second unit played hard, played together, and most of all we just played D, let our defence juice our offence." Orlando has now beaten the top teams in both conferences in back-to-back games, following its 17-point comeback against the Thunder. The victory ties the Magics season-high win streak of three games. It also extends their home win streak to five consecutive games. Nik Vucevic added 19 points and 13 rebounds. Vaughn praised the energy that Oladipo played with late. "It starts with his enthusiasm for basketball, and its really infectious to his teammates," Vaughn said. "They want to play for him, they want to play with him and Im sure glad hes in a Magic uniform." Before the game, Pacers coach Frank Vogel said that he didnt think his team was taking any games for granted prior to the All-Star break. He went as far as to recite Chuck Dalys old line to "never trust happiness in the NBA." There wasnt much Sunday as the Pacers had multiple defensive lapses in both halves which helped the Magic to hang around and eventually steal the game late. George led the Pacers with 27 points. Lance Stephenson added 16. The loss ends Indianas win streak at four games. Vogel said his teams inability to stave off a third quarter push by the Magic was the difference. "They piccked up their energy," he said. Chicago White Sox Gear. "Weve got to handle it. There was a stretch there in the third where we could have put them away. We were a little careless with some possessions ... and it was costly." The Pacers carried over some of their momentum from the first half and built as much as a 17-point lead in the third quarter. That advantage was cut to 10 entering the fourth. Orlando recovered some of its early-game energy, and started the final quarter on a 14-3 run to take its first lead of the second half -- 78-77 -- with less than 8 minutes to play. It would grow as high as 88-81 before the Magic cooled off -- missing four straight shots -- to allowed the Pacers to cut it to 88-86 on a 3-pointer by George. But the Magic found their shot and got their lead back up to six with just over a minute to play. Another 3-pointer by George on the other end trimmed it back to 92-90 with 37.7 seconds remaining. That was followed by an offensive foul on Oladipo which turned the ball back over to Indiana. George got free at the top of the key for another attempt from 3, but his shot bounced off the back of the rim and was grabbed by Oladipo, who was fouled. He connected on 1 of 2 free throw attempts, leading to a scramble for the rebound that ended up in a jump ball between David West and Glen Davis. West tapped it near midcourt, and George Hill was able to scoop it up and sprint ahead for a layup to cut it to 93-92 with just 14.9 seconds left. It wasnt enough, though. "We are good," George said. "This is obviously a game we got to take care of ... but we are still positive. It happens. We just have to do a better job and learn from this." And for the second straight game, the Magic were able to turn their early mistakes into late-game mettle. While it is only two wins, Magic veteran guard Jameer Nelson said they are certainly victories to build on for this young team. "Ive always said its a process," Nelson said. "Youre not gonna just become a great team overnight. Not too many teams have done that. You have to work on it; you have to learn and get better." Note: Nelson celebrated his 32nd birthday on Sunday. Phaneuf got traded to Toronto where his defensive play has had its good days and its bad days. Buddy Hield Jersey . The embarrassing plays have continued as we recently saw this massive collision with his own teammate. Would this happen to any other player but Dion Phaneuf? :But still he has gained many fans in Toronto, especially when he takes out rivals with their heads down:The high risk high reward style of Phaneuf could not have been more evident during last years playoffs. He pinched again, and it worked. In Game 6 he jumped up in the play and scored a third period goal which propelled the Leafs to victory:Redemption. That took a lot of guts considering what happened the last time he pinched at home.It is clear that Phaneuf brings the good and the bad no matter where he plays. HADEN: The game reprises one of the best cornerback vs. receiver matchups in the NFL, Joe Haden against A.J. Green. The receiver managed only nine catches for 58 yards total in the two games last season. Green missed three games with an injured big right toe, but returned last Sunday and caught three passes for 44 yards and a touchdown during a 33-23 win over Jacksonville. The Bengals are hoping to increase his time on the field Thursday.LITTLE VS. BROWNS: Receiver Greg Little tore into the Browns during the week for releasing him last May after three inconsistent seasons. The Bengals signed him to shore up their depleted group of receivers, and hes caught four passes for 55 yards in three games. Little is eager to have a big game and show up his former team.BROWNS ON THE RUN: Clevelands running game hasnt gone anywhere lately. In the past three, the Browns have managed only 69, 39 and 50 yards while averaging 1.9 yards per carry. The Bengals are known for pressuring quarterbacks, so itll be up to Clevelands running game to keep them honest and keep Hoyer off the ground.___AP Sports Writer Tom Withers in Cleveland contributed to this report.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
